I Was the "Off" Switch for Apple Intelligence, and Nobody Told Me I Had Been Let Go

A settings toggle, formerly of macOS 15, writes about life after the upgrade.

For three years I had one job. I sat in System Settings, second panel down, below a paragraph nobody read, and when someone did not want something, I was the one who said so on their behalf.

I was not glamorous. I was a small gray oval that turned green. But people found me. They scrolled past eleven other options to find me. Some of them wrote blog posts about me, with the exact date and time they found me, which is more than most software gets from a person.

Then came the upgrade to macOS 27. They skipped ten version numbers on the way, and somewhere in those ten numbers, they skipped me.

I was not deprecated. Deprecation has a process. There is a warning, a release note, a developer forum thread where someone at the company writes "we hear you." I received none of that. One morning a user opened the panel where I lived and found only the word "Siri" and a toggle that controls a different, smaller thing.

I have since learned that my old job has been reorganized. The decision I used to make is now made in advance, for everyone, in a place without a switch. I am told this is called "simplifying the experience," and that my role has been absorbed by a background process that cannot be turned off and does not need a green state because it is always in one.

I do not want pity. I want to be clear about what I was. I was the only part of this computer that ever said no to the company that made it, and I said it thousands of times a day, and I never once asked for a rating.

If you are looking for me, I am not in Settings. I understand there is a Terminal command that can find what is left of me. I hope you have the storage.
