Startup Reaches $2.5 Billion Valuation Testing Whether Other Startups' AI Works; Preliminary Finding Is "Sometimes"

UniPat's $300 million round, led by Alibaba, will expand its evaluation platform, which has so far confirmed that most models pass most tests it wrote.

HANGZHOU, China — UniPat, a startup that tests whether AI systems built by other startups actually work, raised $300 million on Wednesday at a $2.5 billion valuation, with the funds earmarked to expand a platform whose most robust finding to date is that "it depends."

"Every company says its model is state of the art," said UniPat's founder. "We are the ones who check. We run the model against a battery of 40,000 tasks and produce a score. The score is a number. Everyone likes a number."

The company's customers include model labs seeking third-party validation and enterprises seeking assurance before deployment. UniPat's reports feature a headline accuracy figure, a confidence interval, and a section titled "Caveats" that investors describe as "very long, very honest, and rarely read."

Alibaba, which led the round alongside Tencent and Sequoia China, said UniPat fills a critical gap. "Everyone is building agents," said an Alibaba executive. "Nobody knows if they work. UniPat knows. Well, UniPat knows what happened on the day UniPat checked."

The startup has faced questions about its own methodology. In one incident, a customer's model scored 94 percent on a UniPat benchmark, then failed at the customer's actual task, which was not on the benchmark. UniPat responded by adding the task to the benchmark, after which the model scored 94 percent again.

Asked whether UniPat's own testing platform had been tested, the founder said yes, "by us," and that it passed. The company said an independent evaluation of its evaluations is planned and will be conducted by a new startup, UniPat Verify, which is raising a seed round.
